A team of advisers from UCLA and Baylor have developed a method for cartoon symbols – including letter and shapes – anon on the human brain using electrical stimulation. The result allows individuals who’ve absolutely lost their sense of vision to apperceive the shapes as “sights.”

The new action bypasses the human eye and the optic nerve and uses electricity to activate built-in electrodes at the visual cortex, amid in the back of the brain. Perhaps even more astounding, participants managed to accurately report up to 86 actual answers per minute. This level of rapid advice commitment could lead to a complete anarchy in accessibility for the visually impaired.

Imagine affiliated sensors in public spaces that could alert the visually broken to aggregate from when it’s safe to cross the street to which way the aftermath aisle is in a grocery store using annihilation but the power of electrical suggestion. While the advisers have only tested simple shapes such as the letter C and Z, there’s plenty that can be done with just numbers, letters, and arrows.

For the time being, this tech is stuck in the beginning stage. The need for invasive implants makes it less than optimal for alleviative visual crime in its accepted iteration. But it’s a alluring step in the right direction.
