The secret to negotiating is making it a fact-based chat and not an affecting one.

Here are a few things to accede when doing your research

  • Cost of living in your area
  • Position and aggregation (there might be several companies you apply for)
  • Years of experience
  • Level of role

I would advance spending a few hours researching salary ranges (and other benefits) for the position that you’re applying for in aggregate with those other factors. Here are a few websites to start with.

  • Glassdoor
  • LinkedIn
  • Salary.com

Talk to people you trust

While doing your research, one added source you may not have advised is the people around you. Do you have friends, family, or coworkers that you are adequate enough to talk to? Here are a few ways they might be able to help.

Mock Negotiating

Regardless of how much alertness you do, negotiating is tough. Don’t let the phone call with the employer be the first time you talk out loud about negotiating. Just like any other skill, you need to practice. Find a friend that can convenance the chat with you beforehand.

You can rehearse negotiations just like you would for an interview, speech, etc.

Honest Feedback

Good and trusted accompany are ones that can give absolute AND effective feedback.  Share the analysis you’ve done, and see how they respond. With the right person, they will be honest about whether or not they agree with your findings. As with annihilation else, it never hurts to get altered opinions.

Compensation

In appropriate cases, you might even ask close and trusted accompany about their compensation. This can be a very acute subject, so make sure it’s the right person.

One of the things I accepted most about one of my advisers was his artlessness in administration his advantage amalgamation (we’ll talk more about this in the next section). This helped me have a better compassionate of what to expect for myself based on my about experience.

Ask what others think

If you have an offer in hand, talk to your trusted arrangement about it and see what they think. Would they ask for more money? Would they ask for other aspects of advantage (again, more below)? How would they access this situation?

Consider negotiables other than salary

Salary is what we about look at first when because an offer, but don’t forget there are other items to factor in when attractive at all-embracing compensation.  Here are a few:

  • Benefits (healthcare, 401k match, etc.)
  • Vacation/sick time
  • Stock options/grants
  • Yearly bonus
  • Signing bonus
  • Relocation bonus

There is much more to accede with all-embracing advantage than just salary.

Let’s accede two altered academic scenarios:

Young, single, and renting

People in this bearings might be more open to a ‘high risk, high reward’ advantage package. Maybe this means less affirmed salary, but a higher abeyant bonus allotment or more stock options or grants.

Married with kids and a mortgage

If you have a mortgage, spouse, kids or other agnate responsibilities, you’re apparently less likely to gamble on higher bonuses and stock. Don’t get me wrong, those things still factor in, but the affirmed salary might become the most important piece.

Additionally, time off is apparently acutely important. You want to make sure you have plenty of opportunities to see your kid’s recitals or antic events and take those family vacations.

Figure out which aspects of advantage you value most.

All in all, don’t let these two specific academic scenarios define how you respond. This is a very claimed decision, so spend time addition out which are the most important based on your situation. Know that you have the power to accommodate any aggregate of these items.

Prepare yourself for altered types of offers

With all of the analysis you’ve done and the conversations you’ve had with accompany and family, now it’s time to put it all together. Again, the goal is to take affect out of the equation. You’ve absitively on your salary requirements, you’ve advised what the most important factors are in all-embracing compensation, and you’ve talked to your accompany and family for advice.

You should have a accepted idea of how you would acknowledge to altered types of offers. Here are a few scripted answers that you might find useful:

Low offer

If the offer is too low, you can share your analysis to say that, on average, others in agnate positions are making more.

Based on the analysis I’ve done, the boilerplate salary for this position is $X. Because of that, I would like to ask for $Y.

Average offer

If the offer is on par with average, use your analysis and specific skill set to apostle that you are worth more than the boilerplate person.

This number seems to be on par with the boilerplate salary I found in my research. However, with my years of acquaintance and my specific skill set, I would like to ask for $Y. I can bring X, Y, and Z skills to your aggregation that others cannot.

High offer

If the offer is high, well… go celebrate! But take some time to accede it before giving an official response.

Don’t ever say “Yes” on the spot. Always take a day or two at least to accede it. Don’t make a hasty decision.

Here’s how I would acknowledge to this:

“Thank you for the offer. I’m abundantly aflame about this. Would you mind if I take a couple of days to think it over?”

You might be tempted to accommodate behindhand of the offer being higher than expected. Personally, I don’t feel the need to do so. If an employer exceeds my expectations, then I think they have advised me fairly and I will do the same in return. Again, this is just my claimed take, but keep in mind, sometimes you simply don’t need to negotiate.

Bonus — take notes

As you assassinate the five tips we’ve discussed, take notes! Don’t expect to be able to abound your strengths or salary requirements on the spot. It’s easy to get abashed during a conversation, so write down aggregate you want to communicate.

Final thoughts

Negotiating can absolutely be a tough thing to do, abnormally for those of us that feel afflictive in doing so. Just know that it is your albatross to apostle for yourself because most companies won’t do it for you.

Remember: do your research, practice, and come prepared.
